This is part of series on Nebraska's Historic Animals. These species shaped the ecology and culture of the area and were painted at 8 Nebraska State Historical Parks across Nebraska.
Spending time in the sandhills in western Nebraska as a kid was a blessing. One of my favorite species growing up was the box turtle. These tough little reptiles roam the hills, and have a beautiful shell that sets them apart from the landscape.
