This is part of series on Nebraska's Historic Animals. These species shaped the ecology and culture of the area and were painted at 8 Nebraska State Historical Parks across Nebraska.
Painted at Rock Creek Station State Historical Park. During the years after the California gold rush and before the trans-continental railroad was completed, the fastest way to get a letter to the west coast was via the Pony Express. Rock Creek Station was a relay point on the trail, and every summer, re-enactors put on a heck of a demonstration of this iconic slice of American history.
